Before your first session, it’s completely natural to have questions. In fact, most people feel curious about what hypnosis is — and what it is not.
Below you’ll find clear, honest answers about hypnosis in my Palm Harbor office.
What Is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a natural state of relaxed, focused attention. Rather than sleep, it involves intensified concentration and receptiveness to helpful ideas.
During hypnosis, your critical, analytical thinking softens. As a result, your subconscious mind becomes more open to positive suggestions. Because habits and emotional patterns live in the subconscious, this state makes meaningful change possible.
For example, hypnosis can help you:
-
Increase motivation
-
Reduce stress and anxiety
-
Improve confidence
-
Change unwanted habits
-
Support smoking cessation
You already experience light trance states every day — when driving on autopilot, becoming absorbed in a movie, or drifting off to sleep.
What Is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy uses hypnosis in a structured, professional way to support behavioral, emotional, or health-related goals.
In Florida, trained professionals provide hypnotherapy services. However, certain medical conditions require written approval or referral from a licensed physician before beginning hypnosis.
If you are unsure whether your issue requires medical clearance, please call and ask. I am happy to guide you.
What Does a Hypnotherapist Do?
A hypnotherapist guides you into a focused hypnotic state and tailors the session to your specific goal.
First, we discuss your objectives. Next, I explain what you can expect. Then, I determine your natural responsiveness and design techniques that fit you personally.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor (D.O.T. 079.157.010), a hypnotherapist induces hypnosis to increase motivation and alter behavior patterns.
In my Palm Harbor office, every session remains individualized and collaborative.
Does Suggestibility Mean Gullibility?
Absolutely not.
Gullibility means being easily deceived. Suggestibility, on the other hand, measures how responsive your nervous system is to ideas.
During hypnosis, your mind and body become more responsive — not less intelligent. In fact, creative, thoughtful, and intelligent individuals often respond very well to hypnosis.
Can I Get Stuck in Hypnosis?
No.
Because hypnosis is a natural state, you move in and out of it easily. If a session were interrupted, you would either return to full awareness or drift into natural sleep.
Therefore, getting stuck in hypnosis is impossible.
Will I Be Asleep or Unconscious?
Although the word hypnosis comes from the Greek word hypnos (sleep), hypnosis differs significantly from sleep.
Throughout the session, you remain aware of your surroundings. You can hear sounds, think thoughts, and even speak if you choose.
Most people describe hypnosis as similar to daydreaming. For instance, if you have ever arrived somewhere without remembering parts of the drive, you experienced a light trance state.
Will I Remember the Session?
Yes, you will remember what occurred.
Because you remain aware during hypnosis, your memory stays intact.
Can Everyone Be Hypnotized?
Nearly everyone can experience hypnosis to some degree.
Importantly, hypnosis is not done to you — it happens with you. When you choose to relax and follow guidance, you allow the process to unfold naturally.
Generally, individuals who are imaginative, intelligent, and able to focus make excellent hypnosis clients.
Does the Hypnotist Control Me?
No.
You remain in control at all times. Furthermore, you will not act against your morals, ethics, or personal beliefs.
If a suggestion does not align with your values, you simply reject it. Additionally, you may end the session whenever you wish.
Hypnosis is guided focus — not mind control.
Can Hypnosis Make Me Confess Secrets?
No.
Hypnosis is not a truth serum. Because you stay aware during the session, you control what you say and what you keep private.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
Each person and each goal differ.
While some individuals experience rapid results, others benefit from reinforcement. Typically, long-standing habits require more than one session for lasting change.
Your initial session in my Palm Harbor office lasts up to two hours. During that time, we:
-
Discuss your goals
-
Address misconceptions
-
Explain the process
-
Conduct the hypnosis session
Follow-up sessions usually last about one hour.
Ultimately, your progress determines the number of sessions — not a preset package.
Is Hypnosis Accepted by the Medical Community?
Yes.
The American Medical Association recognized hypnosis as a low-risk therapeutic procedure in 1958. Since then, healthcare professionals have used hypnosis to support stress reduction, behavior change, and pain management.
Should Hypnosis Replace Medical Care?
No.
Although hypnosis can effectively support many concerns, it should never replace proper medical evaluation.
For example, pain often signals an underlying condition. Therefore, you should seek medical evaluation before using hypnosis for pain management.
Once your physician approves, hypnosis can support comfort and emotional relief.
How Does Hypnosis Work?
Hypnosis works by communicating directly with the subconscious mind.
Because the subconscious controls habits, emotional reactions, and automatic behaviors, positive suggestions delivered in hypnosis can create natural and lasting change.
What If My Mind Wanders During Hypnosis?
That is completely normal.
If your conscious mind drifts, your subconscious continues listening. In fact, when the conscious mind relaxes, deeper absorption often occurs.
Therefore, occasional wandering does not interfere with progress.
How Did You Become Hypnotist of the Year?
I was honored by the International Association of Counselors and Therapists (IACT) after they followed my professional work.
During a Tampa Bay television interview, the host noted that the association represents thousands of hypnotists across 20 countries.
It was a meaningful recognition — and one I received with gratitude.
