Can hypnosis enhance artwork or more specifically can it help me enhance my skills? I was recently asked that question and it reminded me of a class I held at an art center several years ago. During the class I explained to the crowd of artists how they are in trance while creating. Many of them agreed that when they were working with the paint or the clay or whatever medium they used, they would lose track of time. The creation seemed to just flow naturally. Perhaps Michelangelo said it best, “In every block of marble I see a statue as plain as though it stood before me, shaped and perfect in attitude and action. I have only to hew away the rough walls that imprison the lovely apparition to reveal it to the other eyes as mine see it.”

I explained about the trance state, it isn’t sleep despite what they have seen on stage or screen. It is real focus, going within is where the genius exists. We chatted a bit about what to expect. Each artist was sitting in front of the medium they used to create. I then took them on a lovely journey in trance. During this time, they wandered down the DNA staircase and back through time until they found themselves in a cave, observing their earliest relatives painting on the walls, or carving or whatever they saw. They watched the fire in the cave dance and reflect on the beautiful artwork. They felt the coolness of the cave and heard the gentle sounds of a drumbeat. Some may even have smelled the paint or the fire or whatever was in their cave.
Next we began a journey back through time and DNA and art history. We enjoyed various cultures and times along the way. We noticed how the artists created the pieces that we observed. It was a fun little trip, reminding them that within their own DNA are the skills and abilities waiting to be awakened. The next step was to awaken those skills and feel the energy of creation, flowing through their hands. With that they emerged to begin working on their masterpiece.
The room was silent, yet there was a buzz of creative energy that was palpable. Slowly I began to hear “oohs” and “aahs” of satisfaction as the artists were enjoying the process and the results! It became clear to everyone that they had brought back with them some special new skills. After the class ended, everyone was excited to share their experience. It was so much fun to hear each individual journey, because even though we went on the same trip together, no two were alike.
So, yes, hypnosis can and does help improve skills and abilities.
